President Sarah Willie-LeBreton Selected for Prestigious Aspen-Kern Presidential Leadership Fellowship

Smith College President Sarah Willie-LeBreton has been named to the second cohort of the Aspen-Kern Presidential Leadership Fellowship, a national initiative dedicated to supporting college presidents as they navigate the evolving landscape of higher education.  

Offered through the Aspen-Kern Program for Leadership and Character in Higher Education—a partnership between the Washington, D.C.-based Aspen Institute and the Kern Family Foundation—the yearlong fellowship brings together a select group of university leaders from across the country and provides a collaborative space for them to reflect on the broader responsibilities of institutional leadership, building on the Aspen Institute’s 75-year tradition of humanities-based leadership formation.

Rather than focusing solely on administrative operations, the program centers on the humanistic core of undergraduate learning: cultivating critical thinking, encouraging constructive civil dialogue across differences, and developing individual character that supports democratic citizenship and human flourishing.

For Willie-LeBreton, an applied sociologist and scholar who has led Smith since 2023, selection for the program highlights a continued dedication to liberal arts education, community building, and equity. The fellowship’s emphasis on constructive engagement mirrors Smith’s own mission to prepare students for lives of distinction, leadership, and purpose in a complex global society.  

Throughout the year, Willie-LeBreton will participate in interactive leadership workshops, engage in executive coaching with distinguished higher education executives, and collaborate with national peers while advancing strategic priorities specific to Smith.

The fellowship also offers humanities-informed seminars and practical resources designed to help leaders address pressing opportunities and challenges in higher education—from navigating polarized campus discussions to fostering inclusive, resilient academic communities.

Willie-LeBreton’s participation underscores Smith’s role as a leading voice in higher education, reaffirming the college’s focus on fostering thoughtful dialogue, intellectual curiosity, and collaborative leadership.
