Smith College Names New Chief Information Officer

Technology leader Heather Woods to oversee campuswide IT strategy and services

Smith College has appointed Heather Woods as its new chief information officer (CIO), bringing to the role deep expertise in strategic technology leadership for higher education. Woods most recently served as the first CIO at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she developed a comprehensive information technology vision aligned with the conservatory’s strategic framework. She previously held several key roles at Wellesley College, including associate CIO, providing both strategic and operational leadership.

Woods holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Wellesley College and a master’s degree in data analytics from Southern New Hampshire University. She is also a HERS Leadership Institute alumna and a Leading Change Institute fellow, reflecting her long-standing commitment to advancing organizational leadership in higher education.

As Smith’s CIO, Woods will provide strategic vision and direction to ensure that technology meaningfully enables the college’s mission. She will oversee Information Technology Services and partner across the campus to strengthen the digital infrastructure that underpins teaching, learning, research, and administrative operations. Her work will play a key role in advancing academic excellence, equity, and innovation through inclusive and forward-thinking digital engagement.
